How do you keep your car battery in good condition?

Episode Summary

Lead-acid car batteries are energy storage devices composed of lead and lead dioxide plates. These plates are immersed in a solution of electrolytes. Water makes up about 65 percent of this solution, while sulphuric acid is 35 percent. The battery is drained when the car is started. The sulphuric acid in the electrolyte solution depletes, resulting in more water. During the charging procedure, the sulfate is returned to the acid.

Episode Notes

The battery delivers the high current necessary by the starting motor to start the car's engine. The engine-driven charging method recharges the battery once the engine is started. The alternator uses energy from the engine's rotation through a belt to charge the battery in this method. The alternator creates power for the car's electrical equipment when the engine is operating.

How should you care for your battery?

It should be carefully maintained to prolong the battery's life. Every month, schedule battery maintenance. It comprises the following items:

Battery and terminal cleaning:

Cleaning a battery entails removing any rust or white powder from the terminals and the battery's surface. Warm water with a spoonful of baking soda is ideal for this purpose. Remove the battery with caution (as mentioned in the replacement section). Check that the detachable caps are securely fastened. Because the white powder is poisonous and should not come into touch with the skin, always use rubber gloves. Apply the solution all over the battery casing.

Thoroughly clean the terminals. To get into tight spots, use a brush. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes before washing it with cold water. Following this procedure, the terminals will be corrosion-free. Carefully replace the battery in its original location.

Electrolyte level examination:

By removing the covers on top of the battery, the electrolyte level within the battery may be seen inspected. The lead plates must be adequately immersed in the electrolyte solution. If you see a drop in the electrolyte level in any of the cells, add some water to it. Allow the solution to combine thoroughly.

Making use of a battery charger/maintainer:

If your car is parked for an extended time, use a battery charger to maintain the battery charged. If you don't trust your batteries, they will die quickly. A battery charger may be pretty helpful in maintaining the appropriate voltage output from the storm. It comes in three modes based on your needs: charge, turbocharging, and maintenance. It may also be utilized to keep the battery voltage stable. Insert the charger carefully into a socket. Connect the positive cable to the battery's positive terminal and the negative cable to the battery's negative terminal. Turn on the switch and let the battery fully charge.

Before embarking on a vacation, always check the batteries. Ignoring your battery’s state might get you in hot water in the middle of nowhere. A 10-15 minute examination might save you a lot of time on your travel. If you know any other critical battery-related information, please share it in the comments area below.
